The Hidden Children of the Wind: The Complete Lore of the Skyborne
Discover the ancient history, culture, and future of the Shenโdorei.
For thousands of years, a band of high elven exiles stayed safe, hidden on their flying home of Zephras Isle. These โSkyborne,โ as they call themselves, shared a bond with air elementals who kept their island floating in Skywall. Theyโre a society reminiscent of the airbenders of popular culture, drawing their power from leylines, traversing the skies in airships called skycutters, blending Highborne arcane with kaldorei naturalism, and utilizing windstones for energy.
Who are the Shenโdorei, the โhidden peopleโ? To understand their current plight in World of Warcraft: Forever, we must look back over ten millennia to a bloody rebellion in the ancient city of EldreโThalas.
The Roots of Rebellion in EldreโThalas
The history of the Skyborne begins in the ancient night elf kingdom of EldreโThalas, home to the Shenโdralar Highborne. If youโve played World of Warcraft, then you know this ruined city today as Dire Maul. Goldrinn had saved Dire Maul from the Sundering, bringing safety to the remaining population. The aftermath left the elves in a desperate position. Severed from the Well of Eternity, the people suffered agonizing magic withdrawals.
To preserve his people, Prince Tortheldrin devised a radical plan. Roughly 3,000 years before the ultimate summoning of Immolโthar, Tortheldrin began constructing a network of crystal foci. These pillars were designed to siphon power from a demonic world in the Twisting Nether, thus creating a new power network to replace the Well.
Many influential noble families of renown opposed this plan. They argued that drawing demonic power could give the Burning Legion a foothold back into Azeroth. The nobles attempted to fight back politically, trying to turn public sentiment against the Prince. Tortheldrinโs response was as quick as it was brutal. Over a single bloody night, he ordered a merciless purge, destroying dozens of noble houses and executing anyone who publicly voiced dissent.
The Rise of the Shalโnan
The surviving detractors went underground and formed a secret resistance. Their leader was a mysterious figure known only as the Shalโnan, translating to โThe Veiled One.โ To protect his identity and his loved ones, the Shalโnan wore a featureless golden mask at all times. He became a symbol of hope for the oppressed citizens, and his title became a battle cry synonymous with rebellion.
Through sabotage, coercion, rumored assassination, and political espionage, the Shalโnanโs rebels disrupted Tortheldrinโs operations. They routinely destroyed the crystal pylons, which caused the Prince daily public embarrassment.
At the same time, a cultural change was happening. Awareness of naturalistic magic had started to spread from the Cenarion druids in northern Kalimdor. Rumors even suggested that Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage was covertly aiding the rebels. Tortheldrin despised this development. He dismissed druidism as base and barbaric, claiming these new ideas were simply propaganda spread by illegitimate usurpers to Queen Azsharaโs throne. He needed his people dependent on his arcane network, not nature.
The Catastrophe and the Exodus
On the eve of the ritual to open a portal to the Legion world, the Shalโnan led a desperate raid on the inner sanctum. The battle caused the poorly constructed summoning spell to spiral out of control. Portals tore open, dumping arcane monstrosities and demons into the city center to prey on the citizens.
The rebels managed to avert the total annihilation of the city. The cost was devastating. The Shalโnan was the sole rebel to survive the final confrontation in the sanctum, suffering permanent, life-altering injuries. Recognizing that his remaining forces would be slaughtered, the Shalโnan chose exile.
He led his surviving people west to Eldreโnarr, a port city on the coast of Feralas. The magisters controlling the port had orders from Tortheldrin to execute the rebels on sight. Sympathetic to the cause, the magisters turned a blind eye. The rebels commandeered ships belonging to purged noble families and sailed west into the uncharted seas.
The Bargain with the Wind
With Tortheldrinโs fleet pursuing them across the ocean, the exiles discovered an uncharted landmass ruled by primordial air spirits. Cornered and desperate, the Shalโnan brokered a pact with the wind elementals.
Using strong elemental magic, the spirits lifted the entire landmass out of the ocean and transported it directly into Skywall, the Elemental Plane of Air. To ensure their safety, the wind spirits erected massive elemental pylons across the islands. These pylons anchored the landmass in the sky and acted as powerful wards, entirely hiding the elves from the native elemental lords, including AlโAkir.
For 10,000 years, the Shenโdorei lived in total isolation, building a self-sufficient society across floating islands like Zephras Isle, Anvilas, and Siroccas.

Evolution and Culture in Skywall
Living in the Elemental Plane of Air fundamentally changed the Skyborne. Initially night elves, they gradually grew smaller, paler, more slender, and significantly lighter over the millennia. This mirrors the physical changes seen in the high elves of QuelโThalas.
Their biology continues to adapt to Skywall. Five generations ago, a new mutation emerged, dubbed the โSky-Touched Blessing.โ Infants began being born with blue skin. In that first generation, only one in twenty children bore the blessing. Two generations later, it was one in ten. Today, three out of every ten Skyborne have blue skin, and scholars predict their remaining night elven traits will vanish in a few more generations.
Society and Traditions
Skyborne culture is a blend of arcane tradition, elemental reverence, survivalist practicality, and fierce independence.
- Leadership: The Shalโnan proved to be a staunch anti-monarchist. He abdicated his leadership role shortly after they settled in Skywall, refusing to become another Tortheldrin. He established a Council of Elders, democratically elected by the people to represent different provinces. Zephras Isle is currently led by High Elder Talaanis Shadowsong.
- Technology and Magic: The Skyborne are entirely ignorant of modern Azerothian engineering. They rely on windstones, blue gems filled with concentrated wind energy, to power their society. For record-keeping, they use small white โrecall crystalsโ that release faint audio recordings on the wind when touched. They also preserve magical golems gifted to them by the elementals.
- Customs: Many Skyborne decorate their hair with hippogryph feathers. Crab meat is a staple meal on Zephras Isle, presenting a rare delicacy on the neighboring islands of Anvilas and Siroccas. When a youth comes of age, they receive an ancient heirloom passed down through generations. Upon death, a Skyborneโs ashes are scattered to the endless winds of Skywall.
The Disappearance and the Factions
Centuries ago, the benevolent wind spirits vanished without a trace. The Shalโnan disappeared alongside them. Without the elementals to preserve the magic, the wards and pylons began to fail.
The floating islands of Anvilas and Siroccas drifted away, losing all contact with Zephras Isle. Refugees report witnessing entire cities crumbling into the abyss. This existential crisis fractured Skyborne society into several distinct and hostile factions.
The Windshapers (Horde)
Led by Grand Skyseer Ayessa Dawnsinger, this group descends from the kaldorei citizens. Theyโre the shamanistic spiritual leaders of the Skyborne. They possess โskysight,โ an innate connection to the elements, and revere the missing wind spirits. They sustain the sacred standing stones in the Shenโdar Highlands and believe they must hone their powers to call their patrons back.
The High Order (Alliance)
Led by Supreme Magister Elaadrin Evengale, these are the descendants of the Highborne magisters. They approach magic as scientists. Having grown complacent over 10,000 years, their arcane skills waned. They now seek to reclaim their ancient Highborne traditions to sustain the islands themselves, rather than relying on fickle elemental gods.
The Peacekeepers
The local militia of Zephras Isle, captained by Valennia Stormfist. Their elite ranks are the Empyrean Blades, the former personal guard of the Shalโnan.
The Nightclaw Druids
A secretive group operating in the Shadowgale Forest. They suffer heavy losses during the zoneโs storyline and are practically wiped out.
A fifth group, the Rangers of Thendal Grove, act as hunters and scouts protecting the borders around Thendal Village.
The tension between the Windshapers and the High Order is violently palpable. The Windshapers view the High Orderโs attempts to study and control the elemental relics as arrogant, echoing the exact mistakes of Prince Tortheldrin. The High Order views the Windshapersโ blind faith in the elementals as foolish and dangerous. Blood has already been spilled between them, and their leaders openly threaten one another.
The Cult of AlโAkir
The most immediate threat to Zephras Isle is the AlโAketh. During their millennia in Skywall, the benevolent wind spirits refused to speak of AlโAkir, making him a taboo subject. A faction of Skyborne shamans eventually used their skysight to peer across the plane, discovering the terrifying might of the Windlord.
Tempted by this power, they formed the AlโAketh. Led by High Priestess Lorthuna, an operative hailing from Deepholm, the cult seeks to bring Zephras Isle under AlโAkirโs control. In a strange and slightly humorous quirk of devotion, the cultists fully shave their heads.
Players experience this conflict directly in the game. In early quests, youโre dispatched to Shenโdar Village because the AlโAketh cult threatens the local populace. You must defend the village and push back the cultists to establish a foothold. Later, you must defend the sacred standing stones in the Shenโdar Highlands from AlโAketh saboteurs.
The cultโs primary objective is to destroy the elemental pylons holding the island up. These pylons double as the wards hiding them from the rest of Skywall.
The Climax at Rohashi Spires
The storyline culminates in a massive confrontation at the Shrine of Akir. The High Order, the Windshapers, the Peacekeepers, and the Nightclaw survivors agree to a temporary, highly volatile ceasefire to stop Lorthuna.
The leaders track Lorthuna to the Rohashi Spires high above the shrine, arriving too late to stop her. Lorthuna reveals the wards have been down for days, successfully lighting a beacon to summon the forces of Skywall.
Rohash, Lord of the East Wind (a recognizable boss from the Throne of the Four Winds raid), answers the call. He reveals a terrifying truth. AlโAkir and his forces had no idea the Skyborne or Zephras Isle existed. The wind spirits had successfully hidden them for 10,000 years.
Expecting to be rewarded as a herald, Lorthuna demands an audience with AlโAkir. Showing the capricious and unpredictable nature of the air elementals, Rohash dismisses her as an insignificant mortal and literally punts her off the spire into the endless sky of Skywall.
Rohash then prepares to slaughter the elves, declaring that AlโAkirโs judgment is inevitable.
New Allies and the Future
Just as Rohash summons his elemental armies, salvation arrives from beyond the planes.
Prior to the battle, both factions had managed to peer through the dimensional veil to Azeroth. The High Order carved a magical keyhole and contacted the Kirin Tor in Dalaran. The Windshapers used their skysight and connected with the shamans of the Earthen Ring.
Forces led by Ansirem Runeweaver of the Kirin Tor and Muln Earthfury of the Earthen Ring arrive through portals to reinforce the Skyborne. Faced with this combined might, Muln convinces Rohash to stand down. Rohash retreats, leaving a chilling promise. He will tell AlโAkir everything about Zephras Isle, and the Windlord will come for them eventually.
With their ancient sanctuary exposed and the wrath of AlโAkir looming, the Skyborne realize they canโt stay isolated any longer. They must seek the strength and knowledge of Azeroth to fortify their home.
The High Order departs on their magical skycutters for Dalaran, officially bringing their ancient magics into the ranks of the Alliance. The Windshapers set sail for Mulgore, joining the Horde to perfect their shamanic potential alongside the Earthen Ring.
The story of the Skyborne is a masterful addition to WoW: Forever, expanding the lore of EldreโThalas, Skywall, and the elemental planes. It prepares the groundwork for a massive future conflict with AlโAkir, ensuring that the hidden children of the wind will play a vital role in the fate of Azeroth.
