World of Warcraft Forever Beta First Look
A hands-on look at the Classic Plus experience.
Right now, the World of Warcraft: Forever beta is officially live. This early build isnโt the final polished version launching on November 4th but it finally gives us a hands-on look at what the community has dubbed โClassic Plusโ for years.
Seeing all these systems come together in real time is an amazing feeling.
If you donโt already have access to the test servers, you can easily request an invite through your account settings. Clicking that button doesnโt guarantee a spot, but the option is always there. Alternatively, you can get instant access by purchasing one of the Forever packs on the BattleNet store. Taking the paid route made sense for me because I obviously had to write this post.
The Reality of Beta Testing
Beta testing literally means finding bugs. It isnโt a head start for leveling or an uninterrupted gameplay session. Just an hour into launch day, developers announced a server restart to apply critical fixes. General chat immediately exploded with angry players freaking out over the downtime. Testing requires reporting broken mechanics and enduring multiple disconnects so the final product actually works. As Iโve noted previously, Blizzard really only has one shot to get this right. But this is beta, not the real launch. That wild sense of entitlement from certain fans always catches me off guard.
Surviving the Queue
Getting past the login screen needed some patience. Thousands of accounts hammered the authentication servers simultaneously and many of us waited in an endless line before disconnecting at the front of the queue. I fully expected this bottleneck. It wasnโt as bad as I first thought it would be. Clayton Stone, the Associate Production Director of WoW Classic, confirmed the massive influx on Twitter. He posted:
Wow, the number of people hammering at the door of the Beta isโฆ insane. Thanks for showing up, everyone! Weโre scaling up and up and up (and up). You will all be in soon. https://t.co/bKB3DFJr0X

Zephras Isle and Early Leveling Pacing
Creating my first character meant starting on Zephras Isle as a Skyborne Elf, obviously. Iโm a long term elf fan, so I had to.
That Skyborne race lacks the option to play a mage or a paladin so, after some brief indecision, I locked in a Hunter to explore. Early questing feels a lot better than the original 2004 experience. Enemy mobs still hit incredibly hard, and pulling two or four enemies at once usually results in a swift trip to the spirit healer. The developers have increased the overall quest density to smooth out the journey. You donโt feel like youโre running across empty zones doing nothing all that often.
They also integrated profession training directly into the starting routine. You pick up a quest around level three or four that offers a choice of specialized manuals. You can select Herbalism, Mining, Skinning, or Tailoring to immediately learn a gathering or crafting skill. That introduction has been missing from Azeroth for years.
I teamed up with a friend for a duo run at launch and hitting level ten took us roughly five hours of steady grinding. Later, my solo Orc Mage hit the same milestone in about four hours. The pacing gets a perfect balance and it feels highly rewarding, just as Classic did.
Pacing Adjustments
Quest density increases drastically in early zones. Players spend significantly less time wandering aimlessly.
Combat Difficulty
Mob damage remains extremely punishing. Grouping up or using extensive crowd control is highly recommended.
Professions
Introductory quests actively encourage grabbing a gathering or crafting skill immediately after character creation.
Visual Upgrades
Players can toggle between SD and HD character models directly from the main options menu.
Visual Upgrades and HD Audio Improvements
You can toggle between Standard Definition and High Definition character models, that was a huge part of the original announcement. The SD versions deliver heavy nostalgia for veterans who dislike the modern, overly stylized art direction. My personal preference leans toward the HD models because honestly, seeing sharp, updated character textures adds a nice refreshing layer to completing โBreak a Few Eggsโ for the fiftieth time.
In all honesty, lighting upgrades truly steal the show in World of Warcraft: Forever. Sunbeams filter through the trees beautifully and make the environment look arguably better than Retail. The audio team has also fully overhauled the ambient sound effects to match the graphical changes. One small thing is that Ray Tracing Shadows are disabled in the beta options menu. When that gets enabled at a later time, itโs going to look even better. The art department in World of Warcraft have always been amazing, and they continue to prove their talent with these environmental overhauls.
Refined UI and Expanded Class Talents
World of Warcraft: Forever changes numerous systems. The developers kept the underlying old-school philosophy intact. Classes receive brand new spells alongside entirely redesigned talent trees.
The beta servers give us our first real look at how powerful these theoretical adjustments actually feel in combat. The new talent interface borrows from modern expansions. It looks very slick and functions perfectly within the classic framework. The entire UI blends the best aspects of vanilla menus with modern usability common in the MMO category. Iโm particularly fond of the side tabs for professions on the character screen. They organize information brilliantly without feeling cluttered.
The Open World Campfire System
One major gameplay addition is the portable campsite mechanic. Players can drop a campfire nearly anywhere in the open world to create a temporary hub. These campsites provide access to vendors, repair anvils, tradeskill workspaces, and resting benefits. Dropping a specific profession object at the fire grants a temporary buff to anyone sitting nearby. For example: Herbalists can place an Incense Candle to boost Intellect. These campsite buffs mimic standard class spells and donโt stack with them, meaning a mageโs Arcane Intellect will overwrite the candleโs effect.
The concept sounds fantastic on paper. In practical application, the buffs feel slightly underwhelming right now. Stopping your leveling route every hour to set up a camp isnโt worth the minor stat increase. Giving those buffs a slight numerical boost would make the system much more impactful.
