World of Warcraft Forever: Blizzard Announces the Ultimate Classic Plus Experience
BlizzCon 2026 brings the permanent Classic Plus mode fans have wanted for two decades.
The gnome is officially out of the bag! BlizzCon 2026 gave us the announcement millions of fans have waited over two decades to hear. World of Warcraft Forever will soon open its doors as a permanent home for old-school MMO enthusiasts because Blizzard has finally delivered the highly requested Classic Plus game mode.
This version will be the new third pillar for the franchise. Itโll join modern retail WoW and the current progression servers to give players an entirely fresh path at level 60. I recently covered retail updates in my WoW Midnight review, and this Classic Plus setup offers a very different feel. The developers decided to keep the game locked in the first year of vanilla content and theyโll expand the world horizontally with new adventures. The level cap will remain permanently at sixty. Importantly, old-school purists will finally have a permanent home.
Horizontal progression changes everything about the endgame. Reaching level 60 means you never need to start a new grind every single expansion just to chase a new max level or replace all your hard-earned gear. Your achievements and items keep their value forever. That ends up giving you a very enjoyable loop where you play for fun and exploration. You leave the endless treadmill behind. It happens to be one of my favorite parts of Elder Scrolls Online, and seeing Blizzard adopt this philosophy for Azeroth is incredible.
Brand New Adventures Await
Iโm excited! Massive amounts of fresh content will populate the game world at launch. Weโll get to explore three brand new zones alongside a PvP battleground: Mount Hyjal, Zephras Isle, Riverglades, and Darkspear Islands. Blizzard overhauled several older zones to include previously unfinished and unreleased vanilla WoW content. Expect to find over a thousand new quests scattered across these updated regions. The design philosophy in WoW: Forever treats the environment itself as the main character. Every corner of Azeroth will hide new secrets.
World of Warcraft: Forever is essentially what World of Warcraft was originally conceived as, built utilizing all the lessons learned over the last 25 years.
Horde versus Alliance is deeply important to Warcraft history. Retail moved on from that conflict, so WoW Forever brings a fresh way to step back into that war. You get to take part in the fight with new Battlegrounds. PvP is so much fun, and this gives everyone a dedicated place to battle it out.
New Zones & Exploration
- Mount Hyjal, Zephras Isle, and Riverglades.
- Darkspear Islands PvP battleground.
- Over 1,000 new quests.
- Unreleased vanilla content finally implemented.
Group Content
- Nine brand new dungeons.
- Two fresh max-level raids.
- Raid groups for 10 and 20 players.
- Horizontal progression mechanics.
Group content gets a massive upgrade too. Weโll tackle nine new dungeons and two fresh max-level raids right away. These endgame encounters accommodate groups of ten and twenty players. Iโm especially excited for the Hyjal Summit raid. Mount Hyjal is such a great zone, and seeing how it plays out in WoW Forever is going to be amazing.
Playable Skyborne Elves and Access
Fans can even roll a brand new playable faction known as the Skyborne Elves, something Iโm very excited about. The community has theorized about this winged race for years and now, weโll finally step out of the shadows to join the fight for Azeroth.
Anyone with a regular WoW subscription gets full access to the servers. You wonโt have to buy a separate box copy to play. You do need to purchase an account upgrade if you want to roll a Skyborne Elf character. The base Classic Plus game remains fully included in your monthly sub.
Updated Mechanics and Familiar Systems
The WoW: Forever developers have implemented much-needed quality-of-life adjustments to modernize the classic experience. Visuals received a huge overhaul across the board and the original character animations now apply directly to the new HD character models. Whatโs more incredible, is that you can easily switch between the old character models and the HD character models at any time in the settings menu. So if you donโt want any sort of modern feel, you have that choice.
Items and race abilities are getting new effects and updates. The development team made sure that race abilities feel more distinct so that each race plays differently from one another. This is going to add some fantastic depth to character builds.
Major class changes shake up the traditional faction balance too. Horde Paladins, Alliance Shamans, hardcore rules, and a brand new legacy talent system will all be available on day one.
Transmogrification will make its debut in a classic experience to let us customize our gear appearances. Youโll find new professions content to keep the economy moving forward. Gamepad support will also be added for the first time ever to help anyone wanting to play on a controller. Every system builds upon the original vanilla foundation because Blizzard wants to enhance the classic experience and keep its signature rough edges intact. Thatโs what makes it so interesting to me.
Roadmap and Release Schedule
We wonโt have to wait long to jump into the action either. Starting on October 27th, you can reserve your name and create your character. World of Warcraft Forever will officially launch on November 4, 2026 so weโve got just a few short weeks to prepare for the grand opening.
The team plans to roll out content updates every four months to keep the world engaging.
Spring will bring major updates featuring two new raids, two new dungeons, new quests, and a legendary questline. Annual expansions will provide massive free additions to the game year after year.
I donโt know about you, Iโm jumping up and down with excitement.
No king rules forever, but World of Warcraft is doing a damn good job.
